Privacy and cookies

1. About us

GetVPN (getvpn.now) is run by Freedom Gateway LLC (“we”, “us”). It is an independent guide to choosing a VPN. We don't sell a VPN, so we never see your VPN traffic, and there are no accounts, forms or newsletters on this site. This policy explains what we collect when you visit, why, who receives it and the choices you have. It does not cover the VPN providers' websites; once you follow a link to one, its own privacy policy applies.

2. Information we collect

You don't give us anything directly unless you email us. If you do, we keep your message and email address to reply. Everything else is collected automatically by the three analytics tools below and by our web servers.

Our own analytics (site-analytics)

Our web server adds a first-party script, served from getvpn.now/_sa/, to every page. It collects:

  • A visitor ID: a random ID stored in a cookie and in your browser's local storage, so we can recognize the same browser when it returns.
  • A device fingerprint: calculated with FingerprintJS from your browser and device characteristics (such as browser and operating system version, screen, installed fonts, graphics and audio capabilities, language and time zone). It recognizes the same browser even if you clear the visitor ID.
  • Device and connection details: browser and device type, screen and window size, language, time zone, device memory and processor count, touch support, connection type and speed, battery level where the browser reports it, how fast pages load, and whether your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals.
  • How you arrived: the referring page, campaign tags (UTM parameters) and ad click IDs in the link you followed.
  • What you do on the site: pages viewed, clicks (including which provider link you clicked), how far you scroll, time on each page, the names of form fields submitted (never what you type) and JavaScript errors.
  • Session recordings: a recording of how each page is used (page layout, mouse movement, scrolling and clicks) so we can replay visits. Everything typed into form fields is masked in your browser before it is sent.
  • IP address and location: your IP address, the approximate location (country, region, city) and network provider looked up from it, and whether the address appears to belong to a hosting provider or VPN.

The script does not read passwords, the values you type into fields, or other sites' cookies. The data is stored on servers we run ourselves.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to measure traffic: pages viewed, how you arrived, device and browser type, and approximate location. Google sets the cookies listed in section 6 and processes this data under its own terms.

Plausible Analytics

We also use Plausible, a privacy-focused analytics service, to count page views and referrers. Plausible does not use cookies and does not store your IP address.

Server logs

When your browser requests a page, our servers record your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page, your browser's user agent, and an approximate location looked up from your IP address.

3. Links to VPN providers

Pages on this site link to VPN providers' websites. Our analytics records which link you clicked. Once you arrive on a provider's site, that provider (and any affiliate network it uses, such as Impact or CJ) may set its own cookies and record that you came from GetVPN, so it can pay us a commission if you buy. As of the date above our links are plain links that carry no affiliate tracking; when that changes, this section will say so. We never receive your name, email address or payment details from a provider.

4. How we use your information

  • To understand which pages and guides are useful and improve them.
  • To measure where visitors come from and which provider links they follow.
  • To keep the site secure, block abuse and automated traffic, and investigate misuse.
  • To account for affiliate commissions once we earn them.
  • To comply with the law and respond to lawful requests.

We rely on our legitimate interest in running and improving the site, or your consent where the law requires it. We don't use your information for automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on you.

5. Who receives it

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:

  • Google and Plausible, as described above.
  • Service providers that host our servers (including DigitalOcean), acting on our instructions.
  • Authorities when the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property or safety of our visitors, the public or us.
  • A successor if this website is sold or transferred; they will be bound by this policy.

6. Cookies and local storage

You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser settings. The site works without them.

You can opt out of Google Analytics on all websites with Google's browser add-on. Blocking cookies does not stop the device fingerprint. To stop our own analytics entirely, use a content blocker that blocks /_sa/ on this site, or turn off JavaScript.

7. How long we keep it

  • Google Analytics data: no more than 14 months.
  • Our own analytics records (visitor IDs, fingerprints, activity and session recordings) and server logs: as long as we need them for the purposes above.
  • Emails you send us: as long as needed to deal with your message.

8. Your rights and choices

  • Access, correct, export or delete your information, or object to or restrict how we use it: email [email protected]. Because we have no accounts, tell us your visitor ID (the sa_vid value in your browser) or the approximate time and IP address of your visit so we can find your records. We will reply within 30 days and may need to confirm the request comes from you.
  • EU, UK and Swiss residents also have the right to complain to their data protection authority.
  • California and other US state residents have the right to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and to opt out of its sale or sharing for targeted advertising. We do not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

9. Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU and UK), and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe we have, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

10. Security and where data is stored

We use HTTPS everywhere. Our servers are in the United States; if you visit from another country, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection law may differ from yours. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy and will change the “Last updated” date above when we do.
